The international certificate course for journalism students continues

On April 11, another lecture of the international certificate course “Truthful Journalism: Even When It Hurts” took place, organized by the NGO “Platform of Student Journalism” in partnership with Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrainian National University.

Matthias Vedeler, an advisor to the Norwegian Press Council, which serves as a public regulator in conflicts regarding the violation of rights and adherence to journalistic standards, told students about the specifics of applying the Journalist’s Ethical Code in Norway.

The lecture was structured in the format of analyzing and discussing conflict situations regarding the violation of rights or damage to the reputation of certain individuals or organizations through the publication of materials in Norwegian publications. The lecturer provided case descriptions, including a case of medical negligence, suspicions of espionage by members of the parish of the Russian Orthodox Church in the city of Bergen (Norway), and a complaint from the Ukrainian Ambassador to Norway against one of the local television channels for spreading Russian propaganda. Participants were asked to determine whether certain norms of the Journalist’s Ethical Code were indeed violated in the challenged publications. Afterward, the lecturer provided a detailed analysis and justification of each decision of the Norwegian Press Council.

Students from not only Volodymyr Dahl National University but also other universities in Ukraine participated in the lecture: Ivan Franko Zhytomyr State University, Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, Ivan Franko Lviv National University, Sumy State University, National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute,” Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University, Daniel’s University, and others.

During the event, participants communicated in English.

The next lecture will take place on April 18.
