Before the online lecture, more than forty listeners from nine other universities in Ukraine joined, in addition to the students of Volodymyr Dahl National University.
Dr. Andrew Giarelli, along with students, shared his vision of the film “20 Days in Mariupol” as journalistic work and as a significant phenomenon in world cinema. During the second part of the meeting, the lecturer suggested that the listeners think about the complex ethical problems faced by journalists working with people affected by war. Using examples from his own reports from cities in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland from April 2022 to November 2023, Dr. Giarelli showed how to find solutions in conflicting situations when, on the one hand, it is necessary to fulfill one’s professional duty to collect and provide truthful information, and on the other hand, it is impossible to do so without further traumatizing those who are already traumatized.

During the lecture, students asked questions and expressed their own thoughts. The lecture and discussion were conducted in English.
The next lecture is scheduled for April 4, starting at 11:00.
